This Solar, situated in Arcas near Macedo de Cavaleiros, is a magnificent example of a house built in the 17th and 18th Century. It belongs to the Pessanha family, descendants of a Portuguese teacher who specialised in navigation, during the period of D. Dinis (Manuel Pessanha). Within the house, particularly the chapel, there is a traditional welcoming atmosphere. An interesting attraction for the guests here is the opportunity to do some traditional farming and the option to use the hunting area. Also one can try the delicious gastronomy of the Tras-os-Montes Region. Within the neighbouring area of Barragem do Azibo and the Montesinho Natural Park, there is a village called França which offers horse riding lessons.
From Porto Airport: Take the A4 to Amarante. Then from Amarante take the IP 4 towards Bragança. Exit the IP4 in the second sign to Macedo de Cavaleiros. HISTORY
The Manor House, dating back from the end of the 17th Century has always belonged to the Pessanha Family. The private chapel has a richly golden carved wooden altar painted in blue, red and white, where images of Saint António, Saint Francisco and Saint Caetano can be identified.
The surname Pessanha has Genoese origin and dates back to 1262. The portuguese king D. Dinis charged Vicente Ennes Cesar and João Paço de S.Lourenço, who were living in Avignon, to choose someone able to help the portuguese in the art of navigation. The Genoese Manuel Pessanha was chosen and came to Portugal. He was appointed Admiral of the kingdom fleet and army by D. Dinis.
The Pessanha family was established in Viseu at the Saint Cipriano farm by the end of the 16th century. The Vilhegas of Viseu has an ancestor D. Fernando Vilhegas, married to Brites da Costa. Dona Isabel do Amaral, his great-grand daughter and JúlioVilhegas do Amaral daughter, married Miguel Pessanha Castelo Branco.
Two soons were born from this marriage, Júlio, who became Lord of the Viseu House, and Francisco Pessanha, who followed the career of arms.
A few years later, after the restauration, Francisco ran away to Nozelos a small village close toArcas, for political reasons. He was sheltered and be friended by tha Sá Morais of Arcas, a noble and rich who wanted him to marry his daughter.
Thus began the "Transmontano" branch of Pessanha family.
