Coruche

Located only 48,5 miles away from Lisbon, Coruche has a remarcable landscape from which we highlight the Sorraia river (Tagus tributary) responsible for the rice's quality which is produced in the Lezíria area.

Cork oak tree (Quercus Suber L.) covers a major part of the municipal territory corresponding to 10% of the national cork production. In average, Coruche produces 5 millions cork stoppers a day which are daily worldwide exported.

We don't know for sure when did Coruche's population settled down but there has been several archaelogical finds that proof the human presence since the Paleolithic Era.

Conquered to the Moors in 1166 by D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king, it was himself who gave Coruche's first foral in May 26th 1182 - a royal document whose purpose was to establish a concelho (council) and regulate its administration, borders and privileges.

For all it represents, Coruche still keeps its traditions facing the future challenges. It inspires trust, culture, innovation and devellopment but preserves the rural characteristics and the enormous passion by Festa Brava .
