A welcome sight indeed this 15th Century house must have been to the weary pilgrims lodging here on the way to Santiago de Compostela. Maintaining this age-old custom of receiving guests, the Sottomayor family today invite the modern day traveller. The spirit of Medieval Portugal is evident in the delightful tower room, with its splendid four poster bed. Paço de S.Cipriano is set amid the most enchanting gardens, orchards and vineyards, inviting you to stroll amongst its scented lush greenery.

How to Get There

From Porto Airport: Take the motorway, A3 for Braga, turning off at the km25 to the A7 for Guimarães. Leave the motorway on the exit of 'Guimarães Sul' upon arriving at the next roundabout turn third left, where is a signal saying 'Urgeses Polvoreira'. At the end of this street turn left and follow the sign for the Paço S. Cipriano (3 km later you'll find our house, in Tabuadelo Village).
From the centre of Guimarães: at the entrance of the city follow the directions of 'Santo Tirso' for the road EN105, 350 m after turn left on the sign 'Estação' and after 300 m, on the roundabout turn right (for the road close the big wall). After 2 km on the roundabout go straight following the sign of 'Paço de S. Cipriano'. 3 km after you arrive to 'Taboadelo' and you will find the entrance of the house at your right, in front of the church.

Set amid 120 acres of enchanting gardens, orchards and vineyards, this 15th century house is located on the old pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela and has maintained its age-old custom of welcoming travellers. The spirit of medieval Portugal is evident in the delightful tower room with its splendid four-poster bed. The owners are excellent hosts and the old stone pool is perfect for summer bathing.

HISTORY
Located in the parish of S. Cipriano de Taboadelo, on the road out of Guimarães, to the road of Covas towards to Penha.
Is property of the same family since the middle 15th century. Owners always lived on it; all long the centuries , it was repaired and refashioned. The last important repairing were made by Dr. João da Costa Santiago de Carvalho e Sousa, uncle great-grandfather of present owner.
Paço de S. Cipriano is a building with U sketch, between the garden and the kitchen-garden.
The house had a lodge to pilgrims and it worked until the end of last century. However, it was not useful any more, being closed immediately after a beginning of fire caused by a passenger.
Nowadays is property of D. Maria Tereza de Morais Pimentel Seara Cardoso and D. João Santiago de Sottomayor.
In order to keep the house according to the present needing, the owners approved to open it to the guests, affording them the chance of admire values and risks of the past life, of which we are now almost deprived.
