Covering 137 hectares of the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede, the Ammaia Club de Golf do Marvão is the first golf course in the Alto Alentejo region. The welcoming clubhouse was inspired by the design of a typical Alentejo house and blends perfectly into the local landscape. Its name comes from an ancient Roman town that previously stood on the site and there are still some remains to be seen scattered about the course.

Designed by the Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva, the course has undulating greens, a large number of bunkers and four lakes. Three of these lakes are to be found in the early part of the course (14 holes on flat terrain) and one in the challenging final sequence of four holes set in the highest part of the course.

The most memorable holes are number 4 (a par 4 requiring an accurate drive because of the water hazard running all along the fairway), number 12 (a par 5 that rises sharply and ends in a split-level green) and number 17 (a par 3 with a raised tee and a green surrounded by water and exposed to the wind).
